Name: Masanosuke Akitsu
Fandom: Sarai-ya Goyou or House of Five Leaves
History: Masanosuke Akitsu used to serve the government as a retainer for the shogun back in his hometown. He was asked to leave the service because of a flaw in his personality. Masanosuke gets very nervous when people watch him, because of this he's been known to run away from fights - not a good representation for a retainer. His failure as a samurai directly affected the reputation of his family and threatened the position of his younger brother Bonusuke (who is also a retainer for the shogun and a favoured one at that). The misgivings as a samurai caused numerous altercations between the brothers and this is why Masanosuke decided to take on an indefinite leave of service and move to Tokyo.
In Tokyo, Masanosuke intended on changing himself and become a better samurai, this is so he can fix his relationship with his brother . But life was hard in that busy city and nothing came easy for him - Masanosuke continuously failed at finding work as a bodyguard, unable to sustain employer interest and confidence. They often let him go because they found him to be too gentle, not at all intimidating and bashful. Masanosuke realizes that the flaw in his personality has become the bane of his existence - as more conflict came his way: To eat or not to eat, to keep his pride or let it go. Soon enough, no more samurai jobs were given to him. All his offers were in line with construction, crafts and many other professions that a samurai would consider a 'disgrace' to his training and skill. He resisted this fate as much as he could and often found himself holed up in his room or walking around Edo lost in thought.
It was during one of those walks that Masanosuke encountered Yaichi and Otake - considered by locals to be 'the yakuza and his woman'. Masanosuke's initial reaction was to flee the scene not wanting to get mixed up with any of their business. But it was a fated meeting and could not be ignored. Yaichi pursued him, fed him and later hired him as a bodyguard. But the original plan was to have Masanosuke as a guard in appearance only. Little did Yaichi know at that time that Masanosuke actually had skill. On their first appointment as master and bodyguard - Masanosuke protected Yaichi from ronin hired to disrupt a business transaction that the other man was trying to complete. He bravely fought off the guards and shielded Yaichi only to lose steam in the end when he noticed his employer watching him.
With his true skill exposed, Masanosuke had no foresight or concept how he fit perfectly in Yaichi's grand scheme of things and what the true nature of his business is. Masanosuke simply was not built to grasp such a complicated matter. All he really knew was that Yaichi wanted him to be his bodyguard and that in return Masanosuke had given him his promise and loyalty.
That still holds true despite the revelations and complications that followed: Masanosuke still considers Yaichi to be his only master even after discovering terrible things about him, even after all the pressure Masanosuke's been getting from his family back in his hometown.
It is safe to say that Masanosuke's canon history is tightly related to Yaichi's because Masanosuke's character relationships only started to branch out after he met him. And Yaichi's development as a character only started to beef up after joing the Five Leaves.
House of Five Leaves in canon is the name of a kidnap-for-ransom group that Yaichi leads, Masanosuke's relationship with the other members (Ume, Matsukichi, Otake) is an established, closed working one that borders on friendship and affinity. This is not encouraged by Yaichi among members but Masanosuke's compassionate and friendly side makes it hard to follow the boss' preferences to a tee. That same personality of his has also drawn the attention of people that are connected to Yaichi's past. Though it is not his history to tell, it directly affects Masanosuke's working relationship with Yaichi. Pre-canon point their relationship is on fragile ground and very much strained, though not beyond repair.
Age: About 25 to 26 years old
Canon Point: In the manga Masanosuke's boss, Yaichi is coming to terms with his past. Bad people are coming after him - and in the wake of this drama Masanosuke is offered a job that should enable him to go back to serving the government. The dilemma makes Masanosuke feel disloyal and torn as he would still like to serve Yaichi and the Five Leaves. Masanosuke finds himself in Vegas right before he can do anything about their situation.
Personality: Masanosuke was and always will be a man that isn't comfortable with people watching him. That's what makes him Masanosuke, unfortunately. It can be attributed to a psychological condition but he has come to the conclusion that it is just the way he is. He is able to absorb lessons and concepts quickly but the execution is a little behind. For example, Masanosuke is taught how to serve tables or any job having to do with public relations - he is most likely to fumble because he tends to psyche himself out before even doing anything. If, on the other hand, you give him work that is not up for immediate scrutiny - he is able to do it well. His confidence in himself is definitely something he should work on.
Masanosuke also has a stubborn streak and a walking contradiction at times - if he thinks that he is right - he will force the issue or take action even if he is alone in this decision. This is clearly seen in his past when no one wanted to help one of the members of the Five Leaves when he was caught robbing a store, Masanosuke went as far as applying for a bodyguard position in order to get close and finally rescue that crew member. One can also see that he goes beyond what is necessary for a man that was clearly doing something wrong; this is because in his own mind, he was rescuing not just a robber but a friend. If that is not bad enough - the ripples from his stubborn streak also result with him being an awkwardly self-righteous person. Masa may be bashful but he is quick to judge, quick in his opinion regarding a lot of things. He likes to believe that he's clearly defined the divides of wrong and right, not wanting to tread on the gray areas. But more often than not, he fails to realize that he's almost always knee deep in gray. A perfect example of this is his quick judgment of the Five Leaves as "a bad crew" doing "bad things" and yet he is also a member that has given his loyalty to the crew's leader.
Masanosuke is self-conscious and likes to keep his appearance neat and acceptable. This is most likely because of his training as a samurai. He cannot simply walk out of bed and face the shogun, after all. He carries this practice even as he serves the Five Leaves and would always like to look his best when with them. As shot as his confidence is, when placed in the right circumstance with the right person - Masanosuke is quite successful in having them open up to him. Nothing intimate just along the lines of making these people share with him what is bugging them at that particular time. He's proven to be especially good with children - maybe as a direct result of being the eldest of three.
As a brother, Masanosuke will do anything for his siblings. He has gone so far as to removing himself from the family registry if only to keep the peace between him and Bonusuke. He listens to his little sister as well which makes him more human and accessible to her.
Finding himself in unfamiliar territory, Masanosuke is always in 'hoping' and 'waiting' mode. He hopes (given the rules of Vegas) that none of the people he cares about ends up there, yet subconsciously tends to immediately look up when someone walks in the door or stare ridiculously at blind corners as if expecting a familiar face to come through. His strained relationship with Yaichi weighs heavily on his mind but at this point he's just happy that he (along with his other friends in Edo) is not in Vegas doing what people do here in order to survive. He considers it as his one consolation.
Powers/Abilities: He does not have superhuman abilities but he is a highly trained swordsman. His athletic skills does not depend on his weapon. He can make do of any item available and use it to his advantage.
